The String Quartet on Stage

Our core string quartet was hired today for a guest performance at the Suntec Convention Hall Ballrooms. The event was the Annual Safety Performance Award 2005, graced by Dr Ng Eng Hen.

It was a marked change from our performance at the Ritz Carlton last wednesday, but it was nevertheless just as classy.

Our quartet performed some standard pieces of Classical music by Mozart and Pachebel, which was rapidly followed by Jazz numbers with STRIIIINGS' members improvising on the spot, a style that has been developed by our players over years of performances. It is such a joy when we can look into one another's eyes, and know what each player will do, all without speaking.

And the audience could tell as well, from their rousing applause!

Serenading the top economists

Last night's performance was memorable in more ways than one:

We played at the swanky Raffles City Convention Centre, in the very room where some of the action (during the recent 117th International Olympic Committee meeting to choose the venue for the 2016 Olympics) took place. Not surprisingly, the sound system was stellar and our piano trio, with our pianist on a grand piano, sounded orchestral.

Enjoying our music were over 500 top economists, policy makers, bankers and academics who were attending the Economic Society of Singapore's annual dinner. As the guests-of-honour in the past have included the likes of former President Ong Teng Cheong, former Prime Minister Goh Chok Tong and current Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, the guest-of-honour last night was no less prominent: Ms Ho Ching, the CEO and executive director of Singapore's investment company, Temasek Holdings, and one of the country's most prominent and powerful women.

To announce her entrance, we played the suitably dramatic tango "Por Una Cabeza".

For the rest of the night, we kept to a selection of rousing favourites like David Foster's "Winter Games" and soothing perennial favourites like "Can You Read My Mind" from the Superman soundtrack. We even injected a little local flavour with ethnic pieces like "Bengawan Solo".

An Evening Among Watches

This evening's performance at the Fullerton Boathouse was extra special when the fireworks sparkled overhead. Our client's guests were treated to Japanese food, lovely music from our group, a panoramic view of the Singapore river and a colourful display in the night sky and beautiful models with new watches.

Our client, Citizen, wanted an hour of Japanese music, so we arranged even more songs by japanese composers to add to our already extensive repertoire. Thus the tradition Sakura Sakura, Joe Hisaishi's love waltz Itsumo Nando Demo, Nobuo Uematsu's Melodies of Life made their debut, along with our other songs, including Inochi No Namae, Suteki Da Ne and Eyes on Me.

Everything wound down at the end of the evening, though our group was pleasantly surprised by requests, which the group gladly performed. The guest also requested for piano solos too! It's always fantastic to receive requests, even though we may not be able to perform the piece as it may not be arranged for the group, but it tells us that people are enjoying our music, and it really perks the whole group up knowing that our performance is appreciated!
