Xmas Jam-athon
Reading from a score is one thing. It's quite another to be able to play a complete song from memory and for three people to co-ordinate, harmonise and jam together sounding good without any preparation whatsoever.
That, we are proud to say, is something that Striiiings players are fully capable of.
The reason for our jam-athon: The Christmas dinner on Dec 9 for the folks from financial services strategy and risk management consulting firm, Mercer Oliver Wyman.
While the setting for the cosy dinner - at the pinnacle of the tallest hotel in Singapore - was brilliant, the guests, after getting satiated on our jazz and bossa nova favourites, started clamouring for more Christmas songs. More than what was in our scores.
So we started playing whatever they wanted to hear, on demand so to speak. That, we did for well over an hour, from Wham's Last Christmas to Joy To The World to When a Child is Born.
As long as we three knew the song, it was all systems go. We even managed to play the carols in different styles, from jazzing it up to playing it in a very holy manner to being sheer virtuosic.
We ended up having just as much of a blast as the inebriated guests, for what better way to get drunk than on adrenaline?
